WHAT IS DRILLING
DRILLING
Mechanical drilling can be applied in conjunction with thermal cutting in combination machines for the following applications: drilling and subsequent tapping, in which case the hole must be particularly accurate to allow subsequent threading; precision mechanical holes used in the case of connecting load-bearing beams, such as on motorway viaducts where precision centre-to-centre distances between holes and accurate drilling are required; holes for piercing for plasma or oxy-fuel cutting, plasma is known to have trouble getting through sheet metal 32 mm thick, depending on the power – it has only been possible to make holes to a depth of 50 mm with the recent advent of Hypertherm HPR 400.
The drilling systems applied to Promotec machines are basically of 3 standard types. ISO 30, ISO 40 and ISO 50. Each of these system types features both a chuck for attaching the tool to the spindle, and a maximum possible drilling diameter based on the power of the electric motor to which each spindle is connected.
It is worth noting that the drilling technology lies, above all, in the tool used. Drilling tools come in various configurations: Spiral Tools, Single-Lip Tools and Insert Tools. The distinguishing feature of each drilling tool is the material it is made of, with which a series of parameters is associated depending on the properties of the material due to be drilled: cutting speed, feed rate, tool life.
The main tool manufacturers are Iscar, (www.iscar.com); Sandvik (www.coromant.sandvik.com) and Sumitomo (www.sumicarbde.com); while if you are wanting to use special shaped tools, Walter (www.walter-machine.com) build special grinding tool machines and also supply special shaped tools.
