| THE PROBLEM

As regards the supply of components to third parties, it was essential to succeed in carrying out not only Plasma and Oxy-cutting operations with several torches, but also drilling and flaring
operations.
In particular, drilling had to be performed with diameters equal to or smaller than the thickness of the steel sheet, whereas flaring required a degree of precision that could be guaranteed only if obtained
by mechanical removal.
A numeric control system to an original design makes it possible to manage
cutting and drilling to a programme, in addition to nesting in its most highly
evolved forms, which maximise the use of steel sheet.
Thanks to special sensors, mechanical drilling can be obtained at constant depth also if the sheet is undulated.
A special aspect of this machine which makes it stand out from other similar machines, is the extraordinary rigidity of the structure and guides: in heat cutting there are no cutting stresses and, therefore, the machine used for cutting does not require any particular
rigidity: That is why, in the machine available on the market, the guides are often of rolling type, with the roller groups simply
rested on the guides. Instead, in the Promotec system, the presence of a mechanical drilling head up to considerable diameters, entails reactions that make adequate structural rigidity necessary.
Therefore a structure with dimensions adequate for maximum work forces was designed. The guides have ball bearings, and are equipped with self-alignment systems, which perfectly withstand also reactions that occur in the most demanding drilling operations.
The perforating unit, which
in this case satisfies the ISO 30 standard, but, on request, can also satisfy ISO 40, has been operating
continuously since July 2005, to the customer’s full satisfaction.
The machine perfectly meets the customer’s expectations, works two shifts per day, and , thanks to its concept - in particular the double cutting process
and the possibility of mechanical perforation - saves considerable time. Furthermore, the valuable Hypetherm source for high definition plasma cutting, provides truly excellent cutting quality.
The possibility of cutting sheets of enormous dimensions up to 3 m x 24 m, enables a very long cutting time-range, i.e. one can obtain a large number of pieces in minimum sheet loading time. Therefore, this system is also suitable for intensive production.
But, apart from its technical
characteristics, we are pleased to say that the machine was conceived ‘made to measure’, i.e. for the specific requirements of the customer company. Its performance should not be underestimated, in view of the size of the system: it is able to perfectly integrate the two technologies - thermal cutting and mechanical perforation.
The machine also had to have the following characteristics: a useful operating field of 3m x 24 m; 4 oxy-cutting
torches, with automatic positionng, a Plasma cutting head
with an HT 2000 Hypertherm generator; drilling units with
six ISO 30 tools with automatic tool changes, fl aring every
time guaranteed to exactly the same depth.
The configuration of the machine, therefore selected
from among the 39,423 possible combinations, was as
follows:
Model: COMBI 30240–6
Number of Heads Possible: 6–9–15
Number of Heads Installed: 6
Number of Master Heads: 2
One carriage for twinned Plasma Oxi-cutting
One carriage with a perforating unit
Number of Slave Oxi-cutting heads: 4
